When the Veil is Thin: Love Beyond Loss

There are moments in life when the veil between this world and the next feels impossibly thin. When grief weighs heavy, and the silence left behind is louder than any sound. In these moments, sorrow can feel vast and unrelenting, like waves upon a shore that has forgotten the sun. And yet, within the depths of sorrow, there is a whisper—a presence, ancient and steady, holding all things together.

Celtic Christianity teaches us that the divine is not distant but woven into the very fabric of existence. God is found in the wild places, in the hush of dawn, in the sacred stillness of loss. We are never truly alone, for love does not perish with the body. It moves like breath upon the water, shifting but never ceasing. Those we have loved do not fade into nothingness; they are gathered into the great circle of life that turns beyond our sight, nearer than we can know.

Grief is the heart’s way of remembering love, of holding what was precious and fearing to let it slip away. But love is not lost. It lingers in the spaces between words, in the warmth of a memory, in the hush of a candle’s glow. It is carried in the wind and the song of the blackbird at dusk. It waits for us in quiet places, reminding us that the bond we share with those who have walked ahead is not severed, but transformed.

There is a deep and ancient truth that sorrow and joy walk hand in hand, that in mourning, there is also an invitation to draw close to the divine. In our tears, God weeps with us. In our longing, the eternal reaches out, whispering the truth that love does not end. And though the road of grief is long, there is light along the way—flickering at first, like the glow of a distant hearth, but growing steadier with each step we take.

So if you find yourself grieving, know this: You do not walk alone. The love you have known still breathes in the world around you, cradled by the hands of the One who holds all things. And when you are ready, when the time is right, may you hear the quiet whisper of hope once more, calling you home to peace.
