As a member of the dispersed monastic Community of Aidan and Hilda, I’ve embraced a daily rhythm of prayer and meditation that roots me in my relationship with God. The community offers a gentle yet profound approach to spirituality, encouraging each member to explore their unique journey of faith within a supportive framework. For me, this daily practice is a commitment not only to my own spiritual growth but, most importantly, to sustaining a deep and intimate relationship with God.
A typical day begins with meditation and prayer from 6:00 to 7:00 a.m. Later, around 1:00 p.m., I pause for a short prayer—just 10 to 15 minutes to reconnect and recenter. In the evening, I spend about 30 minutes in meditation and prayer, winding down with a final moment of prayer before bed. These moments vary between reading written prayers and speaking from the heart, pouring out my thoughts, hopes, and gratitude to God.
Finding God in the Everyday Moments
For me, walking outdoors is a cherished time to feel God’s presence, whether in the song of a bird, the gentle fall of rain, or the quiet beauty of a familiar path. God is there, too, in the people I meet—the moments when I see someone make a change, let go of old pain, or discover new strength. These are glimpses of divine grace in action, reminders of God’s presence moving through us all.

It’s often in the smallest, simplest acts that I feel closest to God. Doing the dishes, for example, becomes a ritual of cleansing, of letting go. The rising steam from a cup of tea or the warmth of a fire on a cold day—these moments are invitations to pause, to listen, to remember that God is woven into every fiber of creation. We are all part of something sacred, interconnected, and eternal.
A Journey Back to God
My relationship with God has changed over time. As a child, I spoke to God often, but like many, I drifted away as I grew older, rebelling against the path I had once dreamed of walking. For years, I felt that God was absent, that I had somehow lost the connection. But one day, I experienced a moment of intense, almost overwhelming emotion as I realized that God had always been there—through every mistake, every fall. God had been catching me, guiding me, waiting for me to return. This experience was both beautiful and humbling, a soul-wrenching reminder of divine love.

Today, I speak with God daily, in all things. This connection, nurtured through my practice, reminds me that I am never alone and that God’s love endures, patient and steadfast.
Creating Your Own Moments with God
If you’re new to a daily rhythm of prayer or meditation, remember that there is no right or wrong way to begin. Just start. Make a moment for you and God, however it looks. Speak from the heart, and then, take a moment to listen. Live each day with open eyes, ready to see God in the unexpected, in the ordinary.
A gentle way to begin is with a morning and evening prayer. Upon waking, offer thanks for the blessings and lessons of past days, the discoveries of today, and all the tomorrows to come. Before bed, reflect on the day’s experiences, feeling gratitude and trust as you surrender to God’s care.

Over time, look for moments of stillness and peace. You’ll find that the more you seek these pauses, the more you begin to feel God’s presence in even the simplest of moments.
Cultivating the Sacred in Daily Life
Our society often pulls us away from what truly matters, making us feel separate from each other, from creation, and from God. We’re led to believe that peace is something to be bought or that fulfillment lies in achievement alone. But when we cultivate an awareness of God’s presence in daily life, we free ourselves from this illusion. The sacred is here, now, waiting to be rediscovered. This awareness brings peace, reduces stress, and reconnects us to the unity we share with all existence.
God is not reserved for Sundays or special holidays; God is for every day. In our small acts, in the quiet spaces, we find a source of peace and strength that nothing else can offer.
When the Connection Feels Distant
There are moments, of course, when we falter, when we feel disconnected. But I remind myself that God’s love is like the sun—it shines on everything, regardless of past mistakes or shortcomings. God’s love, like the sun, accepts without judgment, offering light and warmth to all. In these times, I lean into the knowledge that God is always there, welcoming me back to grace.

Symbols as Reminders of God’s Presence
The equal-armed Celtic cross, for example, serves as a reminder of the harmony and balance that can be found with God. The circle surrounding the cross speaks to the presence of God within creation, unbroken and ever-present.
An Invitation to Begin
Imagine, if you will, that each moment you pause to reflect, each prayer you offer, each small step you take, opens a new door. Imagine that these doors lead you to an inner place of peace, a place that has always existed within you, waiting to be reclaimed.
And as you walk through each door, you find yourself growing, expanding, feeling God’s presence more deeply. Each small practice, each whisper of gratitude, each quiet moment—these are the steps that bring you closer, the steps that transform. Perhaps, in your own way, you’ll begin to see the world a little differently, noticing the threads of God’s presence woven through every moment.

Imagine that you are on a journey, a journey that brings you home, to a place you may have forgotten but that has always been there, waiting for you. And as you continue, you’ll discover that the presence of God is not something distant or hidden, but as close as your own breath, as steady as your heartbeat.
